Can you answer these Facebook questions?

Usually I write posts that give YOU advice. Today I’m the one who needs help.

Perhaps this post, as an open letter, to readers will generate comments, conversation, and help others who have similar questions to mine.

Background

I’ll talk about myself in the third person to keep the questions clear.

Joe Hage, the Director of Marketing Communications for Cardiac Science, set up a Cardiac Science page on Facebook and is presently the only Administrator. Cardiac Science now has 650+ fans.

Questions

1. Joe Hage uploaded a photo gallery. It features Cardiac Science at the Boy Scouts’ Jamboree. Joe Hage was able to tag only people with whom Joe Hage is friends. Joe was not able to figure out how to tag the Boy Scouts of America, a page Joe Hage personally likes (since Cardiac Science can’t “like” anyone, right?).

Is there a way for Cardiac Science (or Joe Hage) to tag the Boy Scouts photographs in the Cardiac Science gallery?

2. Cardiac Science has a Sept 9 event called “Protect Your Employees.” As admin, Joe wants to send an invitation to all FB fans who like the Cardiac Science page. Joe Hage is not friends with 98 percent of them. Is there a way for Cardiac Science to invite them to the event?

3. Every time Joe Hage is on the Cardiac Science page and leaves a comment, it shows up as Cardiac Science leaving a comment. This is usually what Joe wants to do, but every once in a while, he would like to leave a comment as Joe Hage. Is this possible?

4. If Joe were to set up the page all over again, would there have been a “proper way” to do it so the three questions above would have “solved themselves”? Is there something Joe can do now to “de-couple” Joe Hage from Cardiac Science. Perhaps there is a way for Joe to sign in as Joe Hage OR sign in as Cardiac Science? If this were the case, maybe “Cardiac Science” could invite fans who like the page to an event and could tag “likers” in photos?

5. Is there a way that Cardiac Science can leave a comment on someone else’s page? When I try, it shows up as a Joe Hage comment.

Comments

  1. Just figured out the answer to #2. I went to the Cardiac Science page and hit edit. Found events. Set up an event, inviting no one. After creating the event, I was prompted to send a note to Cardiac Science fans.

  2. John Greer says:

    Good questions.
    Anxiously awaiting the answers.

  3. John, do you have a company page? Leave a link.

  4. Hi Joe,

I’m glad you figured out question #2. Having my own Joell presence and my Exit 6 “group”, I have run into these questions myself. Exit 6 has a “group” and a “band” page. I do believe if you want to tag someone, you can add the name at least through a blank space on top of the tag box. The name will show up, but not necessarily link them. I’m not positive, but maybe it will bring up their name where then you can connect with them? Or you could try adding their website that may bring up a link? I have been able to be Joell on my Exit 6 “group” page and NOT our band page, but I can’t remember how I did it! lol I think I did it by being a member of my group (as the administrator), and after I sent out a message to everyone in the group, it shows up on my personal page. Then sharing that message on my personal site to expand the reaches, it shows up on my Exit 6 page as Joell. Hope that helps and that it is not a bunch of malarkey! Check out the Exit 6 Group page to see what I mean. Good luck! I look forward to other responses as well.

  5. @John + @Joell, I visited both of your sites. It would be good if you added Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn/YouTube icons so your visitors can easily find your other content.

  6. I know the answer to # 3. I do! I do! (Waves hand wildly.)

Rich Brooks shows you in this video.:

  7. Yes, Judy. Yes, you in the front row. Very nicely done. You get an “A” on this assignment, but I’m still waiting on your guest post homework on how to build a membership site.

  8. Turns out I didn’t figure out #2 because my readership said they didn’t get anything directly. And Judy, I checked out the video and contacted Rich but didn’t quite get the answer I’m looking for.

I want to be on the Cardiac Science page and, as Joe Hage, comment on something that Cardiac Science wrote.

    Help!

  9. Hi

I went through a few of those questions myself, and here are some things I figured out.
Related to #4, I started my business page from my personal facebook account. I then wanted to separate those, so I have created a new facebook account. I was able to create a “professional” individual account with a first name and last name that fit into facebook restrictions (GameTruck as first name, Seattle as last name), and then I made this new account the unique administrator of my business page. I can now posts from this account as the business page owner, and if I want to post under my own, post from my other account. To avoid mix up, I use Explorer for my facebook personal account, and Firefox for my professional account (I have all my personal pages saved as home tabs in explorer, and all my professional related pages saved as home tabs in Firefox). I believe this facebook set up helps for #3 and #5 too, because the business page itself cannot post comment, but the administrator of GameTruck Seattle Eastside can. Of course, I communicate always on the business page URL for people to Like, and not the account behind.
    Hope this helps!

  10. Didier, this would indeed be helpful as you start out.

I wonder, though, as someone with more than 500 “Joe Hage” friends and more than 700 “Cardiac Science” friends if your suggestion is practical for me.

As I understand it, even if I were to create a “person” with first name Cardiac and surname Science, “Joe Hage” would not be able to get out of being the administrator for Cardiac Science at this point.

May I have a long career at Cardiac Science, but what will happen when I retire from the company? Are they stuck with Joe Hage as administrator forever?

  11. Yeah, I understand it may be more difficult to do that later than sooner.

Anyone of the people that are liking your page can be set as an admin of your business page. To do so, log in with your account, go to the business page itself and then click See All where you have the total number of people that like the page. You can choose which one you can make admin, and once this is done, you can remove yourself from being the admin. I believe you may have to temporary remove yourself from the like list, once a new administrator has been selected, and then like the business page again. Your real account will keep all your friends related to your business, and your business page will also keep its friends. Your administrator account then just remains behind the scene, I know that in my case, people liked my business page, and not my administrative account behind it. You can certainly test this out with a “test” business page to make sure the behavior ends up being what you need it to be when you change administrator status!
